Jordan and Melanie Stevens, and their five children, have lived in their new home for a little over five years. In this time, with love and hard work, their once barren building site has grown into an amazing and vibrant garden. Their house sits on a beautiful red loam, sandy ridge, that gently plateaus down to a clay paddock.

Josh’s journey from riding a Santa Claus-gifted four-wheeler, as a three-year-old, to winning the Australian Superbike Championship, not once but a record-breaking five times, has been forged through challenges, passion and steadfast self-belief. “When I was young, growing up in Mildura, I was very fortunate; we had space and I was always on a bike, riding around imagining I was someone who I idolised; Wayne Gardiner, Mick Doohan.

After twenty years in Melbourne, Gavin and Tracey Jackson returned to Mildura to be closer to family and old friends and enjoy retirement at a slower pace. With a clear vision, the right block of land and a team they trusted, they built a timeless, light-filled home to suit their new lifestyle – and they’ve never looked back.

At first glance, Lindsay Butcher’s extraordinary sculptures may seem straightforward, but a closer look reveals intricate layers of symbolism and storytelling. With every abstract steel piece he creates, Lindsay challenges the boundaries of imagination and materials, inviting us to see beyond the obvious and explore the unexpected.

Maria discovered her love for hairdressing while she was still at school, leaving at the end of year ten to pursue her career. Over two decades, her passion has extended far beyond cuts and colours, as she witnessed clients, family and friends struggle with hair loss as part of illness. Her introduction to hair loss solutions, including extensions, toppers and wigs, was sparked by a genuine desire to make a difference.

When in Rome…. book into a cooking class! It’s the best fun – and you get to eat what you cook! The ‘Cook, Dine & Drink Wine with a Local Chef’ tour was one of the highlights of being in Rome – and meeting other pasta-lovers from around the globe was a great way to spend the afternoon. You’ll find these delicious recipes on page 114.

If you don’t mind a few scorchers, Sunraysia is at its best in summer. Our blue-sky days and warm nights lend themselves to relaxed outdoor living so whether you are looking for some fast fun on the river or you are ready to wind down after a big year, in Mildura, you’re in the right place.

In the past year, we’ve shared great stories about the people and places that make our region special and that trend continues in our last issue for 2025.

Having recently won his fifth, record-breaking Australian Superbike Championship, we couldn’t resist a conversation with Josh Waters. He is best known for his speed, but away from the racetrack, for Josh it is all about family and never forgetting where he came from. 

We also caught up with local sculptor, Lindsay Butcher, ‘man behind the mike,’ Pat Silcox and the couple behind Red Dirt Lamb, Anna, and Lachlan Sutton. All of them found ways to follow their passion, creating careers doing what they love; inspiration for anyone wondering how to make their own dreams a reality.

As always, this issue allows you to step inside two stunning, distinctively different, homes. One, a new build for empty-nesters and the other, a large family home, lovingly renovated to balance the needs of today with those of tomorrow.
