A multidisciplinary artist, curator, writer and researcher, Luci has more than 29 years’ experience in the Mildura Arts Centre’s (MAC’s) Gallery and Heritage team. It’s a role that involves curating exhibitions, educating visitors about MAC’s history and its extensive catalogue of works, running public programs, and promoting everything that happens in the MAC galleries.

Garden

Gardens vary to meet the needs and tastes of their owners. Some gardens are planted in an open design which can be easily seen and admired. Others are more private, enclosed by walls and shrubbery. Both are beautiful in their own way. Janet and Paul Hicks love coming home to their haven, where they can relax and enjoy their lovely garden.

Parrying the jabs life has thrust at him led Nick to establishing his own community in the world of boxing, with a focus on supporting others with their physical and mental health. With support from his family and an inner determination to do better, he changed the trajectory of his journey, with boxing playing a significant role.

House

Sitting centrally on a generous block in Windsor Court Irymple, Ash and Elyse Kempton’s home is a statement in bold, contemporary design that takes its inspiration from industrial architecture. Beyond the detailed façade and front entrance, elevated ceilings in the kitchen, dining, and living areas create a sense of space that is further amplified by the seamless use of polished concrete flooring throughout the house.

Local Art

Growing up in Mildura, Stephanie Carbone saw firsthand how many talented young musicians were scattered across the region, often learning in isolation with few opportunities to connect or perform. Now known by her married name, Stephanie Gashi, she created Mildura Academy of Music and Performance (MAMP) more than ten years ago to change that.

At first glance, the Coghlan family looks much like any other; two working parents – they run Strong Pilates Mildura – Daniel still pulling on his footy boots for the Irymple Swallows, Bianca running harder and faster than she probably should, two-year-old Brady busy exploring the world and five-year-old Skyler doting on her little brother. But behind Skyler’s cheeky smile lies a far heavier truth. She lives with Dravet Syndrome, a rare and severe form of epilepsy that affects nearly every aspect of her development and health. It is a diagnosis that has reshaped not just her days, but every minute of their family life.

Tucked behind rows of trees on the highway into town, All Seasons Mildura Holiday Park has become that place for many families; a tradition passed from one generation to the next, cherished for the memories of connection and celebration it continues to hold. For twenty-five years, owners of All Seasons, Jodie and Sean Bromley, have repeatedly welcomed the same families back to the park.

When Roberto Pettinau walks through the grounds of St. Joseph’s College in Mildura, he is not just making his way around his workplace, he is retracing his own footsteps. Two decades ago, Roberto was a student at the College, now he’s back, ‘on the other side,’ teaching VCE Biology and Year 9 Science, hoping to instil in his students the same curiosity and passion for life and learning that he has.

Ask almost anyone living in the Mildura-Wentworth region and they will tell you that autumn is the best time of year and there’s a very good reason why. While the days are still warm, the sun has a little less punch, leaving us with stunning blue skies and a tapestry of colour as the vineyards go from lush green to brilliant reds and yellows. It is the perfect time to be outdoors, making the most of Easter and the long weekends.

In this, our birthday issue, we are bringing you some truly touching stories to read during your down time, they remind us that life, and love, are the only things that really matter.

You can read about Skyler Coghlan, a little girl living with Dravet Syndrome, and be inspired by her and her family’s daily strength and commitment to generating support for the many families impacted by rare genetic forms of epilepsy. 

We introduce you to Ian Felton, who despite a difficult life, is choosing to focus on joy, creating an eclectic collection that honours his late wife. Nick Wakefield shares his own challenging journey and explains how he is using his life lessons to build a positive future for himself, his family and his community, through
